Join us on a whirlwind tour of nightlife in early twentieth-century Paris! From the cosmopolitan cabarets of Montmartre to the lavish Magic-City ballroom, we will explore the world of the Parisian dance hall. A program of tangos, maxixes, waltzes, and one-steps will be performed by full orchestra, smaller ensembles, and voice/piano combinations. This interactive lecture-recital from musicologist Dr. Sophie Benn and music director Dr. Trae Blanco illuminates how the city embraced, transformed, and at times resisted these imported dances. It also explores how these new musical styles reflected a quickly changing world.
