Audiences can be some of the first in the world to hear the piano music of Agnes Tyrrell (1846-1883) when pianist Jocelyn Swigger plays a recital of Tyrrell’s Etudes and Idylls. Swigger is a leading Tyrrell performer and scholar, and this concert is part of the world premiere tour of Tyrrell’s Idylls and set of 12 Concert Etudes. Tyrrell was a virtuoso pianist and genius composer in the late nineteenth century. “Tyrrell truly mastered her craft,” Swigger said. “Her music is cinematic and emotional and so beautiful, and it is really exciting that we can discover it now.” Swigger traveled to the Tyrrell archive in Brno, the Czech Republic, and photographed Tyrrell’s handwritten manuscripts, then practiced from those photos. In addition to practicing and performing, she is in the process of editing and publishing Tyrrell’s music. “I feel like all of my life and learning up till now, including my seven years practicing Chopin etudes, was leading me to this moment so I can tackle the gorgeous complexities of her music,” said Swigger. Swigger is Music Professor at Gettysburg College Sunderman Conservatory and Instructor of Piano at Interlochen Arts Camp.
